Yesterdog is a Grand Rapids icon and a perfect way to kick off Doggie Latchkey’s local eats feature. We know many of our clients are new to the Grand Rapids area and we hope you will find these features informative and enjoyable. The food scene in Grand Rapids has so much to offer and we want to share some of our favorites with you!
Yesterdog opened in the heart of Eastown nearly 50 years ago and has not changed much since, other than a welcomed expansion into the neighboring space. The interior is a throw-back, featuring a plethora of antique signage and decades worth of names carved into the wooden walls.
One of the most enjoyable and special aspects are years’ worth of photos showing loyal patrons wearing Yesterdog shirts around the globe. Especially memorable to the Detroit Tigers fanhood at Doggie Latchkey are the photos of Yesterdog founder Bill Lewis with the employees he took the 2006 World Series.
The walls of this Grand Rapids institution tell the story of how much Yesterdog means to the people of this great city. Another source of pride comes from the restaurant being featured as the go-to hangout spot for the high school students in the original American Pie movie.
The Doggie Latchkey family hails from the Detroit area, where we certainly know a good hot dog and Yesterdog serves some of the best we have outside of the Motor City! Check out our article on the history of two iconic Detroit coney dog joints. Yesterdog’s menu differs from the Detroit version and offers several specialty dogs including the Ultradog, with chili, cheese, onion, pickle, ketchup and mustard. Our favorite is to add mustard and onion to the Cheddardog that features just chili and cheese – a dead giveaway that we are native Detroiters!
We hope you will stop by for a few dogs, or you can even have them delivered and enjoy a Yesterdog at home while reminiscing with a rewatch of American Pie. Leave us a comment below and tell us which is your favorite to order.
Yesterdog is located at 1505 Wealthy St SE in Grand Rapids, right in the heart of Eastown. We might also suggest you take a stroll down Wealthy Street and grab a pint at Brewery Vivant and take in one of the most unique atmospheres offered by a Grand Rapids brewery. Make it a full night out let us take care of your pup by scheduling a Doggie Latchkey dog walking visit.
